Jeffrey Driver was born in 1951, and grew up in the NSW country town of Cowra. His early working life was as a journalist.

He was made deacon in Bathurst in 1977 and ordained priest a year later. He served in the dioceses of Melbourne, Bathurst, Grafton and Canberra & Goulburn before being elected Bishop of Gippsland in 2001.  He became Archbishop of Adelaide in 2005. He was for a time Executive Director of St Mark's National Theological Centre in Canberra and founding Head of Charles Sturt University's School of Theology. He has been a lecturer in New Testament at St Mark's Canberra and was Archdeacon for Ministry Formation in the Diocese of Canberra & Goulburn.  He was also a member of an ecumenical network for TEE (extension education).

On his appointment to Adelaide, Jeffrey was instrumental in the formulation of a response to victims of sexual abuse within institutions connected to the Diocese of Adelaide.

He has had a long term involvement with Anglicare and is President of Anglicare SA.

In 2009 Archbishop Driver will participate in his third youth pilgrimage to Africa. In 2003 and 2006 he led pilgrims to Rwanda and Sudan, fostering relationships with both the Diocese of Gahini (Rwanda) and the Diocese of Juba (Sudan).

He has been a long time advocate of the Ordination of Women, and moved the bill supporting this development (which ultimately failed) at the 2004 General Synod. Following the 2007 finding of the Appellate Tribunal that opened the way for the ordination of women to the episcopate, he convened a working group that assisted the 2008 Australian Bishops’ Meeting in developing protocols to provide ministry to those who could not accept this development.

Jeffrey holds a PhD from Charles Sturt University, MTh. from the Sydney College of Divinity, as well as Scholar and Licentiate in Theology from the Australian College of Theology.

Jeffrey is married to Lindy, a registered nurse, whose church and community involvement include care of the aged and ministry with children. They have two adult children; Robert and Eva.

His hobbies include fly-fishing, gardening and reading.
